Employee Safety And How Training Can Be Vital
25 October 2021Safety and security have become important words over the last ten to fifteen years. For every organisation, it is now vital to ensure the safety and security of their employees. There are many safety related training courses on the market, although not so much in terms of increasing security knowledge of staff. Employee safety and security is an area of specialism for the ASTA Security Academy. Providing a range of security related courses with the sole intention of increasing employee safety and protecting the organisation.
What The Law States
It is an employer’s duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees and other people who might be affected by their business. Employers must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve this. This can mean many things to many organisations. However, the governing factor is that all organisations must protect their employees from harm.
Risk and the Law
This could be from variable safety related risks through to protecting employees against security risks. To understand the risk then employers have duties under health and safety law to assess risks in the workplace. Risk assessments should be carried out that address all risks that might cause harm in your workplace. Remember, a workplace could be different for many employees. It could be in an office for some, or a workplace in a fragile or hostile environment, so the risk can vary significantly.
Benefits of Security Training for Employee Safety
The benefits of corporate security training can be far reaching. Having the ability to increase skills and knowledge within a workforce can be the difference between employees and organisations remaining safe, and being at risk. We also have to look at the overall safety and security strategy of an organisation and how training is embedded and integrated into such a strategy. As ASTA is owned and operated by a leading security company, then we do have experience of mapping our training to the strategic goals of an organisation.
Training vs No Training
There would be a remarkable difference between an employee who has received relevant training compared to an employee that has received no training. This statement is valid for any type of training, from job specific training to safety related training. Training and development provides the skills, knowledge, and insight to better prepare people. Security training does this by educating employees on the threats they may face, how to act accordingly in the face of such threats, and how to reduce or mitigate the risks associated with these threats. Employee safety and duty of care entitles any employee to be informed of the risks associated with their employment. More importantly, how to reduce the risk, and how to manage themselves in certain situations.
Removing Barriers to Training
Organisations come in many sizes, and we understand this. This fact alone can mean that large organisations may be more difficult to in terms of delivering training. Then we have organisations that are scattered all over the country, or even the world! Then we may have different levels of employees that require varying levels of security and safety training. The list goes on. However, ASTA understand such barriers and this is why we have adapted our delivery so that we can overcome most, if not all barriers to learning.
We have worked with many organisations and have learnt how to cater for different sizes, structures, and placement of employees. We get to know each organisation and by doing so we can recommend suitable training programs and courses. We can also recommend the most efficient and cost effective delivery methods for each program whilst always considering the learners needs. It may be that employees are located around the globe and so it would be difficult to provide classroom based learning, so we would look at e-learning or virtual classroom based training. It may be that an organisation requires differing levels of training for the general workforce, and then additional training for supervisors or managers. A training needs analysis helps in all situations as it can identify specific requirements and helps to create a factual picture of an organisation and its training needs.
Employee Safety Summary
Organisations of any size invest in all different areas of training, and we believe that security and safety training should be one of the top priorities for any organisation. This type of training should be accessible by all organisations and this is why it is important to have a fair approach to fees relating to such training. So, whether it is a small organisation or a global company with thousands of employees, a tiered cost model can benefit all.
